      *This posting will be hiring 3 incumbents for Kokomo, IN and 2 incumbents for Greencastle, IN locations*

      Duties:

      Under direct supervision, and on a training basis, to help and assist employees of higher line classifications engaged in, and to perform basic operations required in, the installing, removing and maintaining of transmission and distribution poles, towers, conductors, transformers, pole top switches, cable and other line equipment, devices and appurtenances, services, street lighting equipment and certain phases of work on metering installations, to assist in the patrolling of lines and to perform other related work.

      1. Help, assist in, or perform basic operations required in, the installing, removing and maintaining of poles, towers, guys, arms, platforms and other components of line or equipment supports, helping on guy, anchor, tower, and street lighting equipment constructions and assisting in framing poles, attaching transformer supports, arm assemblies, and appurtenances to poles and doing other similar work.

      2. Help in stringing, sagging and tying line conductors, in installing and removing insulators, in installing and removing cable lengths and in other similar work.

      3. Help in operations required in installing, removing and maintaining line equipment units and associated devices such as transformers, switches, voltage regulators, constant current regulators, lightning arresters, cutouts and other equipment items, by attending to working needs of linemen and participating in basic operations.

      4. Assist in, or perform the basic elements of as directed, operations for installing, removing and relocating services, entrance runs, metering enclosures and self-contained watt-hour meters, participate in installing and removing transformer-rated watt-hour meters and service streetlamp units, replacing lamps, cleaning glassware and painting fixtures.

      5. Unload, reload and store poles and help in moving and relocating heavy pieces of apparatus.

      6. Set out warning signs, clear project sites of obstacles and dig holes or trenches for poles, anchors or cable installations.

      7. Help in or perform a variety of related work such as driving truck when required, tree trimming, tending payout or take-up reel, making tool and equipment repairs and minor repairs to trucks, aiding in patrolling or switching during emergencies, helping in hot stick work and in service work, attending to needs of employees engaged in checking connections, painting work equipment, disposing of brush and handling other similar work.

      8. Perform, or assist in, under immediate supervision, such higher skilled or more involved operations as may be safely assigned, in order to provide comprehensive training by utilizing infrequent work opportunities or in order to cope with unusual situations. The crew supervisor or foreman is responsible for judging, and has the authority to decide, the capabilities of an apprentice to perform safely electrical work of a hazardous nature.

      9. Maintain work equipment and areas in a clean, orderly condition, continuously observe Company safety rules and practices, check condition of safety equipment, attend scheduled safety meetings, participate in artificial respiration practice as required and become familiar with safety manuals, rules and special procedures prescribed by the Company.

      10. Perform other related work as required.

      Qualifications:

      1. Graduation from high school or applicable equivalent either in job training or study.

      2. Some previous experience in the handling of materials desirable.

      3. Indicated physical ability to climb and execute duties on poles.

      4. Indicated ability to use hand tools, digging tools, and ropes.

      5. Must qualify for automobile operator's license.

You will have 72 hours to complete your assessment (online test) immediately following submission of your application .

      Additional Job Requirements:

      • Ability to successfully complete the Virtual Assessment for Line workers (VAL)

      • Ability to successfully complete Physical Abilities Test (PAT)

      • Ability to obtain Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL)

      • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight-rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.

      • This position has a residency requirement. You must reside within 30 miles of the assigned operations site. In order to meet with aforementioned position requirement, you will be required to relocate from your current residence within 9 months of your start date. Relocation will be entirely at your own expense.
