Job Description

- 15-20 hours in late August and early September for training and new student welcome activities.
- 3-5 hours per week including some evenings and weekends.
- Flexible scheduling based on academic availability and operational need.
- Summer hours, November/Fall Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break hours not available.
- Additional hours required during late August and early September for training and new student welcome activities.
- Move-In Date - August 17, 2025 (if resident of University Housing)
- Start Date - August 18, 2025
- Fall training dates: August 18-22, 2025
- Note: Start date and training dates may change but will not be any earlier than the dates listed above
- Mentor and meet with residents in Essence 3-5 hours per week during assigned office hours.
- Connect residents to faculty, spaces, and other resources on campus.
- Report any resident concerns to appropriate Housing staff.
- Create and implement 1 program/workshop per semester based on mentor group’s common interest(s).
- Participate in key community, Housing, and larger campus sponsored events with residents.
- Support and staff Essence events as needed.
- Support and staff Essence prospective student outreach efforts including giving tours, acting as a student ambassador, attending prospective student events and distributing materials.
- Attend monthly staff meetings and bi-weekly meetings with supervisor.
- Other administrative duties including entering time and attendance information on a timely basis
- Preference given to students who by start of employment have completed 2 semesters of college post high school (summer school does not count as a semester). Transfer students must submit transcripts from all current/previous institutions to reflect the completion of two semesters post high school.
- During pre-employment and employment, a student staff member must abide by the University Residence Halls Contract, the Student Housing Handbook and the University of Wisconsin System academic and non-academic policies and expectations.
- Must be able to attend training on the dates listed above in Additional Scheduling Notes.

2 Position Summary/Job Duties:
Peer Mentors support Essence by building meaningful mentoring relationships with residents and help with programmatic and outreach goals of the Essence community. Mentoring will take place through formal and informal interactions that include providing guidance, information, academic and career development resources and support. Essence Peer Mentors are student leaders responsible for role-modeling and fostering a welcoming and caring community for all Essence residents.
