      EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NEW PRODUCT COMMERCIAL STRATEGY

      Key to Ionis’ commercialization strategy is maximizing the value of each medicine in its deep portfolio. A key role in the organization is the Executive Director, New Product Commercial Strategy, a global role, as they will be a major contributor in delivering on the Company’s strategy and supporting the development and commercialization of new products to benefit patients and create value for shareholders. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Global Product Strategy, the ED, New Product Commercial Strategy will oversee strategic new product planning including responsibility for designing and executing product and disease level strategies to advance medicines with multiple potential indications and portfolio management for novel first-in-class drugs. S/he will oversee commercialization strategy for assets in the development lifecycle (candidate selection through phase 3 start). S/he will collaborate with Research, Development, Business Development and Commercial colleagues to develop early to late-stage (t-24) asset strategies for Ionis’ large R&D portfolio.

      RESPONSIBILITIES:

      This position is a leadership position which will be responsible for multiple therapeutic areas outside of Neurology and Cardiology franchises within a large portfolio of both very early-stage assets as well as late-stage assets at the ~t-24 timepoint.

      • Lead the commercialization of potential new assets
      • Lead cross functional teams that develop analysis of target markets to determine current and future treatment paradigms, competitive landscape, unmet need, product positioning and value proposition, making commercial judgements around implications
      • Act as commercial champion on early and late-stage program teams to ensure that customer needs are incorporated into all development and life cycle management plans
      • Drive early brand message development, including collaboration with medical affairs/medical communications (publication plans, continuing medical education/ congress activities and creating and driving market development activities)
      • In collaboration with internal advocacy partners, define and develop both professional (KOL) and patient advocacy plans and establish strong relationships with key stakeholders. Ensure key customer and patient perspective is included in the drug development process
      • Develop and execute early life-cycle management initiatives, including follow-on indication analyses and global launch opportunities
      • Develop 1- and 3-year strategic commercialization plans for wholly owned assets in late phase (t-24)
      • Develop appropriately sized strategic plans for early stage assets including pre-IND assets
      • Participate in company-wide portfolio planning, providing appropriate commercial POV for single assets and at a portfolio level
      • Manage a yearly budget to target
      • Monitor competitive intelligence by keeping up to date on market trends, competitors, and opportunities. Support preparation for IR engagements
      • Partner in the evaluation of external licensing deals for product candidates in collaboration with Business Development/ Alliance Management
      • Actively engage with key R&D leaders in forums including the Research Management Committee (RMC) and Development Management Committee (DMC) to represent the commercial POV
      • Create and present regular presentations in various company forums including company and Board of Directors meetings as required

      QUALIFICATIONS

      The ED New Product Commercial Strategy will be a relationship-oriented leader with strong science fluency, who can establish and maintain credibility with internal and external scientific and business experts. S/he will be a best-in-class marketer with experience developing and implementing innovative global marketing and commercial strategies for in-line and pipeline products. Prior experience commercializing multiple products in diverse therapeutic areas, particularly for rare/orphan indications, is highly desirable. This leader will also have in-depth knowledge of the biopharmaceutical industry across the continuum of large and development-stage companies.

      The ideal candidate will also possess the following experiences and attributes:

      • Experience working directly with R&D organizations to drive optimal asset/portfolio decision making
      • Knowledge of/experience with of clinical development from early through pivotal phase
      • Skilled in early product commercialization and developing and continually refining a commercial strategy to take advantage of evolving market opportunities
      • Success in maximizing growth of a product portfolio and optimizing the potential of pipeline products and new indications
      • A strong background in marketing and marketing analytics with the ability to apply learnings to strategy development
      • Experience developing detailed commercial plans in connection with product teams.
      • Highly effective as a mentor, teacher, and coach; able to attract, develop, inspire, and retain key talent
      • Rare disease commercialization experience and/or major launch/new indication launch experience
      • Experience building and/or executing strategy in the rare/orphan therapeutic area and other relevant therapeutic areas to prepare for the approval, launch and ongoing commercial management of a company’s products
      • Experience developing launch plans for product candidates
      • A solid foundation in and appreciation for the science, followed by an understanding of the business application
      • Advanced scientific degree ideal, but not required

      The pay scale for this position is $180,000 to $272,946
