Act as a delegate for the CRO where required at senior management committees and/or Board meetings.
Provide pragmatic, commercially-focused, timely advice to the business areas including, but not limited to, risks arising from insurance, reinsurance, product development, broker/partnership relationships, financial, strategy and plan, operations, strategy and change.
Provide 2nd line advice, challenge and oversight of the strategic and regulatory change portfolio and individual change programs
Lead Risk Business Partnering engagements across all aspects of risk to contribute to the Business’s understanding, assessment, and management of risk in achieving Aviva Canada's business objectives and responding to its changing needs.
Lead oversight of aggregated risk profile monitoring through value-adding reviews and challenge of risk profile / trends and identification of material changes in risk profile and emerging risks.
Work with senior leaders to identify key risks in all Business activity and influence risk managed outcomes
Identify assess and report on emerging risks and contribute to action planning with business leaders to manage and mitigation of emerging exposures.
Work with colleagues across the business to share risk knowledge and expertise contributing to achieving business strategy, developing an environment of 'no surprises' through open and honest two-way communication.
Clearly outline risk and governance paths and frameworks aligned to Business processes and Business decisions.
Monitor the wider risk landscape, ensuring a comprehensive view across the risk spectrum for current and emerging risks.
Lead education and awareness activities to drive embedding of Aviva’s Risk Management Framework.
Represent Aviva Canada and Canada Risk for various global initiatives
Represent Aviva Canada on IBC committees / consultations or other external committees
Represent the Risk team on management committees through reporting, participation and challenge all the way up to the Board as required.
Contribute to the quarterly CRO report.
Support the VP, Quantitative Risk provide oversight and challenge of insurance and pricing risk, capital allocation / deployment decisions including M&A deals, and business plans.
Lead a team of Risk Business Partners that are the point of contact between the Risk team and the Business teams in Personal Insurance, Commercial Insurance, Surety, Reinsurance, Central Technical Underwriting (CTU), IT, Data and Change Management and other areas of the Business.
Provide strategic leadership. As part of the CRO’s leadership team, actively collaborate to ensure the Risk team acts with one voice and is effectively joined up.
Promote a continuous improvement culture where lessons learned are shared across the Risk function and globally.
Based on feedback from the business, build the annual Risk plan, prioritize, shift, track and monitor to the plan throughout the year, and drive execution of the plan.
Support the team of Risk Business Partners to be in integrated and important member of the Business
Proactively and continuously engage senior stakeholders to achieve embedding Risk Business Partners into the Business
Be recognized as an independent and robust challenger by those in Canada, but also as a source of advice for solutions/improvements
Role model and drive high-performance culture within the Risk function
Deliver effective performance to ensure achievement of risk outcomes
Direct the work and coach the team and other collaborators on opinions and other pieces of work across the entire Risk team
Recruit and retain a high-performing and engaged team of Business Partners
Provide valuable and timely feedback to the on the work delivered
Coach and mentor the team to support individual career and development goals.
Ten (10) years or more of progressive experience in P&C insurance.
A graduate degree (e.g. MBA) will be considered an asset.
Governance and risk management experience.
Solid negotiation and relationship management skills.
Broad awareness of regulatory/ accounting regimes and local business environment in Canada
Seven (7) or more years of team management or leadership experience.

The VP, Risk Business Partnering works alongside the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) to provide strong and effective leadership to the Risk Business Partnering team and, more broadly, to the 2nd line function. Risk Business Partners are committed to the long-term success of Aviva Canada and are responsible for influencing the Business to remain commercially focused to achieve the company’s strategic ambitions while maintaining balanced risk taking.
Through strongly embedded business partnering, Risk Business Partners – across Personal Insurance, Commercial Insurance, Surety, Reinsurance, Central Technical Underwriting (CTU) and IT, Data and Change Management – provide leaders within the Business with Risk’s independent opinion and assessment of risk exposures, the risk profile and actions that should be taken to handle and mitigate risks pertaining to key business decisions and change programs. The model also provides the business functions with embedded 2nd line support, technical input and expertise. Their key role is to help management understand the risks the organization is taking and why it is taking these risks, with a view to maximizing the risk and reward trade off.
The VP, Risk Business Partnering will also work with stakeholders to ensure that Aviva Canada operates within its Board-approved risk appetite framework and that the appropriate culture, governance, and oversight arrangements are in place.
